In this tip on the importance of staying current with the latest versions of your laboratory software we will discuss Security. Staying current with the latest features protects your laboratory and your data with the latest security protocols and patches. Reminder: We will cover both Empower and NuGenesis Software.
Let’s get started.
Understanding the risk of a cyberattackThere are several risks associated with cyberattacks, including financial loss data breaches, reputational damage, and operational disruption, all of which can impact individuals as well as businesses. In 2025, the two main types of cyberattacks were those looking to capture large-scale historical data to extort entire organizations, and session-based attacks stemming from weak authentication or identity management. Understanding where the potential vulnerabilities are in your business is the first step to protecting yourself against cyberattacks.
STEP 2How to stay secure with NuGenesis SoftwareTo ensure your laboratory software supports your efforts to remain secure, it’s essential to keep it updated to the latest version. The latest version of NuGenesis includes critical protections including support for database encryption. We have also had a third-part run a penetration test on the latest version of NuGenesis to ensure there are no vulnerabilities.
STEP 3Staying secure with Empower Software
As with NuGenesis, we have instructed a third-party to run a penetration test on Empower to ensure there are no points of vulnerability and improvements have been made over the last several versions of Empower to remove potential security vulnerabilities.
STEP 4Make sure you understand exactly what security updates have been made
Remaining secure is your responsibility, and it’s important to ensure you are fully aware of security updates made so you are aware of any potential gaps that exist. Some of the most recent security updates made to Empower include Verify Files and improved communication pathways, both of which have significant benefits to the security of your data and laboratory infrastructure.
STEP 5Ensure you also know how security updates affect compliance
As with general security, compliance is also your responsibility, and some security updates can have a direct impact on compliance. Recent versions of Empower software have also seen updates that relate to security in the context of compliance, including audit trails for locking Channels, Verifying Data Incomplete and copying from a parent project to sub projects.
