In this tip for Empower Chromatography Data System (CDS), we will answer a question from an Empower User.
QUESTION:
When I create a custom field, what affect does Precision have on the Custom Field? It appears that I can further modify the precision in Review.
Great question. Let’s see how it’s done!
When you create a new Peak Custom Field there is a screen in the Custom Field wizard prompting you to enter a Precision. This is only a display precision. Empower uses a precision of 14 to make all calculations.
Once the Custom Field has been created, you can view the properties of the custom field, and the Precision is visible.
We see the results of the Custom Field in Review on the Peaks tab with a display precision of 3.
If you right click on the header for the field and select Column Properties, you can change the display precision.
Now I’ve changed it to 6.
Another example – if you look at %Area, the default precision is 2. If you change it to 3 you can see differences in the values (look at the first peak). Once again, this is a display precision and, in this case, it appears to be rounding the value.
NOTE: If you want to round or truncate a value you would need to create a Custom Field using the ROUND function. There are additional Empower Tips covering this topic.
It’s that easy!
