In the last two examples, we learned how to set limits for all impurities as well as specified impurities. It may be necessary to report total impurities as well as group impurities of a similar type together. These tasks are easy to do in Empower.
Let’s start by bringing a sample set into Review, open the processing method, click integrate followed by quantitate.
Click the Processing Method tool and then the Impurity tab. If we want to report total impurities found in our sample, check the box marked Calculate Total Impurities.
Return to the main window and click quantitate. Scroll to the bottom of the peaks table and you will see a new line for Total Impurities. The impurity response for the total impurities is the sum of the individual impurity responses for any peak whose response exceeds the reporting threshold. You can also unhide the Number of Peaks in Group field to have the peak count for the group.
Return to the Impurity Tab in the Processing Method. We can set a limit for the total impurities by entering a value in the Total Impurities field.
If we want to create groups of impurities based on a common component type we can do so very easily. Click on the Component tab and note that we have 3 impurities that are Low-Level Impurities.
Click on the Impurity tab and in the area marked User Defined Impurity Groups, start by entering a name for the group in the Group Name field. In the Component Type field, select the Component Type from the drop-down list – in this case, Low Level Impurities.
Return to the main window, click quantitate and scroll to the bottom of the peaks table. You see a new line just above the Total Impurities for the new group. The Impurity Response for the group is the sum of the responses for the 3 peaks with the component type Low-Level Impurity.
