In this tip for Empower Chromatography Data System (CDS), we will answer an Empower user question.

QUESTION:

It appears that you can enter amounts and purity factors into the Component Editor and the Processing Method. Which one should I use and why?

As we learned from Tip 292, you can enter the amounts for the components in your standards within the Component Editor. This can be done in either the Run Samples window before data acquisition or post run in Alter Sample.

You can enter a Purity value for the standard components in the Component Editor as well.

Alternatively, you can enter both amounts and Purity values for components in your standards in the Processing Method on the Default Amounts/Purity tab.

If you enter values in both places, the values entered in the Component Editor override what was entered in the Processing Method on the Default Amounts/Purity tab.

If you remove the values from the Component Editor and enter Levels for the standards, Empower will use the values entered in the Processing Method.

The result based on the values entered in the Processing Method can be seen.

As to which one you should use? It really depends on your SOP. If you have a method that uses the same standards with the same amounts and Purity values, then you can put these values in the Processing Method. On the other hand, if each method uses different values, then you may want to enter the values in the Component Editor.
