In this week’s tip, we will answer an Empower user question.
QUESTION:
What instruments can be connected to Empower?
Good question. This topic is always a great idea to review since there are multiple ways instruments can connect to Empower and many instruments that can be connected.
Let’s see how it’s done!
The answer to this question, I broke it down into two types: 1) instruments that can be connected directly to Empower and 2) legacy instruments that can be connected via an eSATIN box.
Type 1
As I previously mentioned, many instruments can be connected directly to Empower. These are instruments for which a driver has been created by the manufacturer and you can create an Instrument Method to control these instruments.
Here are a few examples of which drivers exist. (NOTE: there are many different models from each of the following manufacturers)
Agilent GCs, headspace samplers, LCs, and fraction collectors
DANI GCs
Hitachi LCs
Metrohm ICs
PerkinElmer GCs and LCs
ProteinSimple ICE
SCIEX/Beckman Coulter
Shimadzu GCs and LCs
Thermo Scientific LCs, ICs, and GCs
Type 2
If you have a legacy chromatographic system for which a driver does not exist, you can connect the detector output of that system to an eSATIN box which is an analogue to digital converter. The analogue signal from the detector is converted to a digital signal which Empower can then capture and process. You can connect an “inject Start” signal from the legacy system to the eSATIN box so that the eSATIN starts collecting data with start of each injection.
By connecting all of these various instruments to Empower you can have one chromatography software in the lab which manages the collection, processing, and reporting of all chromatographic data.
It’s that easy!
