Empower Tip: ALCOA++Tip #418: Configuring Empower for ALCOA++ | Defining the first ‘+’

In this tip, we learn about the first ‘+’ in ALCOA++

In this tip, we learn about the first ‘+’ in ALCOA++

The first ‘+’ means Complete, Consistent, Enduring and Available.

(Note: I recommend reading Tip 411 before reading this tip)

Let’s see how it’s done!

Complete means the data must be whole, a complete set:

The concern about using Annotation Tools to modify/hide results in reports is alleviated with Empower

Disallow the use of Annotation Tools

User Types control who can do what

Typically, Users cannot delete:

Methods and Custom Fields

Raw Data and Results

Calibration Curves

Nodes and Systems

Default Strings

Administrators may have the privilege to delete:

Projects for manual archiving only

Users, User Types and User Groups

Consistent means the data must be self-consistent, i.e. proactively assessing complete data sets to detect DI Issues (Data Review SOP)

Empower built in Analytics

Method Analysis shows the amount of reprocessing of data per project and per User

A Sample Set is processed to generate a Result Set, therefore, every sample should have a Result (figures 4 & 5)

[figures 4 & 5]

Enduring means the data is durable, i.e., lasting throughout the data lifecycle

Minimum daily backups to a remote location to guard against data loss, configured through Waters Database Manager

Execute and document a trial restore from your backup

Available means the data is readily available for review or inspection purposes

Data must be kept as Original Records or True Copies (Empower electronic records) for the full retention period

Empower plus data management with NuGenesis Lab Management System can automatically manage archiving of Empower Projects – no need to manually delete projects

Advanced tag searching makes it easy to find data by analyst, sample ID, batch number and so forth

Empower data can be viewed in Inspector or restored to Empower for further processing

Any current version of Empower will read data from all previous Empower versions

It’s that easy!
