Installing the tool-free fitting adapter

Installing the tool-free fitting adapter

Waters BioSuite columns and some non-Waters columns may leak when connected with the tool-free fitting. In this case, the user must install an adapter between the column and the tool-free fitting.

Warning: To avoid personal contamination, wear clean, chemical-resistant, powder-free gloves when handling fittings.

Required tools and materials

  • Appropriately sized open-end wrench to counterhold column
  • 5/16-inch open-end wrench
  • Tool-free fitting adapter (separate adapters are available for Alliance iS and Alliance iS Bio)
Note: The tool-free fitting adapter is a single-use device. A new adapter is required for each additional column.

To install the tool-free fitting adapter:

  1. Push the end of the adapter inward until it is flush with the O-ring.

  2. Tighten the tool-free fitting all the way into the adapter.

  3. Unscrew the tool-free fitting from the adapter by 1-1/2 turns.

  4. Push the end of the adapter inward until it stops against the tool-free fitting.

  5. Unscrew and remove the tool-free fitting from the adapter.

  6. Remove the O-ring from the adapter.
    Caution: To avoid leaks, ensure that the tube remains stationary when removing the O-ring from the adapter. If the tube moves, reinstall the O-ring and repeat the procedure.
  7. Screw the adapter finger-tight into the column inlet port, and then counterhold the column inlet port with the appropriate size wrench. Using the 5/16-inch open-end wrench, tighten the tool-free fitting adapter an additional 3/4-turn.

  8. Tighten the tool-free fitting securely into the adapter. For more information on tool-free fittings, see Tool-free fitting.
